Looking to get your kids out on the water this summer? Ship them out on a privateer from the War of 1812!
We’re offering three week-long sessions of Schooner Camp for 2009. Your child will spend a week aboard the FAME, sailing, swimming and exploring! Campers learn how to sail a traditional wooden vessel and experience what life was like for the fishermen, traders, pirates and privateers who built our North Shore.
No previous sailing experience is required! Cost is $395 per camper.
Session 1: July 20-24, ages 8-12, 9 AM – 3:30 PM
Session 2: August 3-7, ages 8-12, 9 AM – 3:30 PM
Session 3: August 17-21, ages 10-14, 9 AM – 3:30 PM
$395 per camper
We are also offering a three-day, two-night overnight session! There are eight spaces available in this session.

Maritime Lectures in Salem
In partnership with the National Park Service, Fame hosts a free monthly maritime lecture series in Salem. There is no lecture in January. Join us on February 4 as volunteers from Friendship return with tales and photos from their adventures aboard the USCG Barque Eagle. The steel-hulled Eagle is the Coast Guard Academy's training ship, and is the only square rigger in active service. She is capable of making 17 knots under sail!
These monthly lectures take place at 7 PM at St. Joseph Hall, 160 Derby St., Salem. They are free, and the Hall is handicapped accessible. For more information, call 978-729-7600 or 978-740-1660.

Festive Rum Drinks
In our search for the perfect rum drink, we have sampled many a concoction, and made up some real doozies. Although a great rum drink often doesn't need much more in the way of ingredients than a great rum, here's a recipe from The Swizzle Inn on Bermuda that we enjoy very much:
Rum Swizzle
4 ounces Goslings Black Seal (or another dark rum)
4 ounces Mount Gay (or another amber rum)
2 ounces Triple Sec
Juice of two lemons
5 ounces pineapple juice
5 ounces orange juice
2 oz Falernum or Simple Syrup
4 dashes Angostura Bitters
Make sure schooner is firmly docked, moored, or anchored. Mix ingredients in a pitcher with cracked ice and shake vigorously until frothing head appears. Strain into cocktail glasses. Serves three sailors or six ordinary folks.
